Title
Letter from Henry to Clara, December 20, 1886
Subject
Death; Funeral service; Buildings; Schools; Teachers; Children of missionaries; Typhoid fever; Orphans
Description
Henry mentions Mrs. Cunningham's death and tells Clara that he was in charge of the funeral alongside Mr. Henry. According to Henry, this year they have had more people falling sick than usual--a German missionary also died recently and Miss Butler has typhoid fever. Then, Henry tells Clara that they are still looking for new premises and discusses their budget. He writes about the school and the students' routine, which includes playtime with Henry's sons, Willie and Richard.

Canton Dec 20th 1886.
Dear Clara
This is the last day for
letters and I think it is your
turn for one. I presume Mattie
may have written by the last
mail of the death of Mrs Cunningham.
It was not entirely unexpected
although the doctor was still
hoping she would recover till
near the end I believe. She
left a little daughter some 2
weeks old which I have heard
is to be named Elizabeth Happer
Cunningham. Bella heard
from the Amak at meeting
yesterday that Mrs Cunningham
told her just the day before she
died that she hoped to be
out again in another week
that she herself thought she
might go out now, but the Doctor
was not willing to have her go yet
She seems to have passed
away very quietly about
3-o-clock in the morning of
Dec 9th. There were funeral
services held at the house at
3-o-clock in the afternoon
of which I took charge and
Mr Henry assisted. The
next morning the remains
were taken to HongKong and
laid to rest in "Happy Valley."
As the steamer did not arrive
in HongKong till rather late
the burial took place by
moonlight. There has been
very much more than usual
sickness here this year.
Only last Tuesday a member
of the Berlin mission died.
I was not acquainted with
him as he was at one of
their country stations but he
came to Canton, (after he was
taken ill I believe) and was at
the German Mission residence here
when he died. It is quite a sad
case as his bride was expected in
HongKong daily when he died. I pre-
sume she has arrived by this
time although I have not heard
certainly. Miss Butler is
just now ill with typhoid fever
has been sick about a week.
Dr Suan told me last night that
he thought she was getting along
fairly well.
We are still on the
search for new premises are
all going out this evening to
look at a place. I saw one
place week before last which
is plenty large enough if it
were a little better situated
The price though is beyond our
reach at present, some 7000 [?tacls?]
= $9,800. I hope we shall
some good place after awhile
The school is full now and
under better arrangements now,
I think than it has ever been
since I had it, have a very
satisfactory arrangement for teachers
which is a great thing, received
two or three days ago the
59th scholar for this year.
The bell has just rung and the
little boys have come from Shameen
ours go [--overy--] over every morning and
have a good play with the little
Alabasters and then all four came
here together at 10-o-clock or a
little after and study till noon.
Then they go to study at 3-o-clock
in the afternoon and after 4 go out
for another play Willie & Richard enjoy
greatly the company of these other little boys
and they seem to be just as well
pleased. I used to teach them at
3-o-clock but somehow it gets crowded
out, so of late Bella has taken them
both parts of the day & they are getting
along very well. Willie will evidently
make a good mathematician, and no doubt
Richard when he gets along to it. Now I must
close Your aff Bro
Henry.
