Description
Upon his father's request, Henry records in this letter his sons' heights and weights plus his wife's and his own. Dr. Happer came back from Japan two weeks ago and he is still not very well, so he intends to go home before the rainy season. Henry tells Clara that Willie likes to read, especially the Bible. There was some trouble involving some foreigners at one of the large temples yesterday. Daily preaching at the chapels has been temporarily suspended, but services are still held.

Canton Oct 27th 1884
Dear Sister Clara
The last opportunity
for sending letters to HongKong
for the American Mail is this
morning and so I will send
a few lines. The last mail
brought Mary's letter speaking of
her visit to friends in the
East. I am glad she could
go and that she had such
a good time. Before I forget
it I must reply to a request
Father made in his last letter
viz to send the heights and
weight of the children. We
have all been recently weighed
and measured and the result
is as follows. Weight to the nearest pound
Richard Varnum 44 lbs Willie 55 lbs
Bella 111 lbs Myself 158 lbs.
Our heights are as follows
Richard Varnum 3 ft, 6 1/4 inches
William Dean 4 ft
Bella 5- 1 1/2 inches
Myself 5- 11 inches
All measured with slippers
on. So if you will take these
heights and fill them out to
the right size to make the
weights above mentioned you
can imagine how we look.
Dr Happer came back from
Japan about two weeks ago.
He is not as much
improved as I expected he
would be although better than
when he went away. He
intends to go home before the
rainy season comes on.
He does not go out of the
house much. I believe his
left lung is quite seriously
diseased. I suppose Mrs Happer
will go with him and Verdie
will remain here.
I forgot to tell you when
writing about the children that
Willie is getting to like very much
to be read to, and he likes to
have the bible read to him better
than any other book. If asked
what book he wants to have
read he almost always says
the Bible. His mother has read
to him a great deal and he will
listen as long as any one [--is usually--]
can read to him. He has begun
to read the gospel of John himself
with some one teaching him. He spells
all the long words. He got to the
14th Chapter yesterday. His "little
brother" is getting to be a very in-
teresting little fellow. He always
liked fun and he used to seem
to have a little spice of recklessness
about him, but [--the--] he now seems
very ambitious to be "a good boy".
Canton has seemed quiet since
the last mail went until yesterday
I heard of some disturbance at
one of the large temples. Two
foreigners had gone there and
a large crowd gathered and
soldiers were sent to disperse
them. I do not know the
particulars. I heard that the
foreigners had wine and that
the crowd said they were taking
powder into the temple, were French
&c &c. I suppose we shall
hear more about it to-day. It
is not anything I presume that
will effect our quietness. The chapels
are still closed so far as daily
preaching is concerned but church
services are held.
