I saw your lines in reference to the death of Mrs Cunningham. I think they
are very nice. They were published in the China Mail, Chinese Recorder + Womens Work
Canton Aug 3d 1887
Dear Hattie
Your last letter was dated
June 14th. It is true as you
gathered from Martha's letter that
we thought very likely when we
should get letters from home after
what Mrs Graves we should
hear that Mother was not living.
It seemed to me as though God
meant we should be prepared
for it. It did not come so
suddenly upon us. We had
time to think about it in the
few days of uncertainty that
passed after hearing of the telegram.
The future word is a great
mystery but we may be
thankful that we know so
much about it as we do.
I am very glad you could get
so good a portrait of mother in
India [illegible] and hope Father's will
will be equally good. Am glad
to hear too that Father is getting
strong enough to go about again
twice, when saying good bye,
he has felt that it was the
last good bye for this world,
but I now have strong hopes
of seeing him again - Before
this time you will have seen
Bella and the children. Sarah
and Mary will also be at
home ,and the house will
be quite filled up. I hope
you have all enjoyed it
and are still enjoying it.
Am glad "poor old Ned" still
holds on his way and that
you managed to keep him
going for the children - probably
he may be a little more interesting
to them from the fact that their
"papa" used to ride and drive him.
It has seemed to me to be
rather an unusually hot summer.
For the past two or three weeks
the thermometer has been going
up to 90° or over every day, and
you know when it keeps at
that, with every now and then
a Westerly wind, our surroundings
are liable to get heated. I am
beginning to feel a little tired of
it. I am keeping my school
on to the middle of August, so
as to have a country trip. The
Fultons that is Mr + Mrs F and
the children Dr Kerr + Martha were
planning to go to Kwai Ping and
they have asked me to go along
which I have concluded to do.
I shall be glad to see the scene
of the Conflict - will be also glad to
see Ng-Chau again- I have never
felt quite satisfied [--to--] not to
have a chance to do some more
work then, and in a measure
cover up the ignoble retreat
he had to make, the last time,
when they gave us such a
storming. I do not suppose we
will experience any difficulty
in simply passing though and
preaching and selling books, and
not having any chapel diffi-
culty to attend to, as we had
when we went with the Simmons.
The [u]old stagers[/u] seem to have
to look after Canton interests this
summer. Mr Henry, Mr Wisner +
Dr Thomson have been in Macao
all summer ,and Mr White
since the first of May. The
Swans have also been there about
6 weeks I should think so that,
as far as the men are concerned,
Dr Kerr + I have been "standing
by the stuff" in a figurative sense
The Fultons have been here but
of course their station is not re-
garded as here permanently, though
they do what they can while here.
I asked Fulton about the 1st of June
