Near Canton Sept 15th 1887
Dear Clara -
I have only this sheet of [--pp--] paper left and am going to use it to
write home this morning. We are between Fatshan and Canton about
ten miles from the latter city. [u]We[/u] means Mrs Fulton, Dr Fulton, Mattie +
I. We left Dr Kerr and Mr Fulton about 3 miles below Kwai Ping in
the other boat. We went up the river in two boats. Dr Kerr Mattie + I had
one and the Fultons the other. We had a very pleasant journey
up the river for fourteen days besides the two Sabbaths. We did not
do very much Mission work on the way excepting on the Sabbath
when we were auctioned. The first Sabbath was at a small village
and Mr Fulton + I went into it and distributed some tracts
and talked with the people. The second Sabbath we spent it
Ping-Nam the first district city below Kwai Ping. Dr Kerr and I
went into the city in the forenoon and spent about two hours
there - had a very good time. The people were fairly civil
though some runners from [?Yameen?] came and wanted
us to leave which however we did not do till we got ready.
In the afternoon Dr Kerr prescribed some from the boat + I dis-
tributed tracts on the shore to people who were returning from
[Note: page torn] market. Monday and Tuesday we e going up the
river where we arrived at Kwai Ping Tuesday evening
Wednesday morning Dr Kerr and I took tracts and
went through one of the principal streets distributing
The people were fairly and and we met with no
particular trouble. Thursday morning about 10-o-clock
a number of roughs came out from the city and
made a demand that we should [--make a demand--]
3 or 4 dollars for a festival that was in progress.
It is called by Europeans the Chinese All souls festival
The object is to worship in behalf of wandering
souls who have no one in particular on earth to
care for them - Of course the demand was refused -
They talked of course abusively and now + then one and
another came down to get on our boat which we
would not allow. Gradually the crowd was increased
by additional squads till there were about fifty. Mrs
Fulton + Miss Dr Fulton began to get quite nervous as it seemed
so much like their former experience that [--the--] it was thought
best for their boat to leave and anchor elsewhere. Mr Fulton
left with them and Dr Kerr + I remained with our boat
and two [--men--] boatmen in it. They were not enough
to have taken the boat away even if we had [illegible] it which
we did not. The rabble threw some clods at us but we
remained on the bow of the boat facing them and after
about a half an hour more they left. They made all
sorts of threats that they would come at night, or to morrow
with a larger crowd, that they would push us into the
water [illegible] - but we remained there until Saturday
night and were not again molested. Then we
went and anchored at the other End of the city
near the Fultons boat. Sunday morning a force of
[?roudies?] came out and shouted for awhile and
pelted our boat with a few clods + stones but we
paid no attention to them and they soon left- A few
minutes after we heard a shout and looking out
say they were at Fultons boat. They gave it quite
a bombardment with some fire wood that the
boatmen had unfortunately left on the bank. By the
time this was over the Fultons were ready to leave
and no [?amount?] [note: Page torn] of persuasion could [?induce?] them
to remain, so Dr Kerr very reluctantly went with [?them?]
The ladies and I started for home in the Fulton's boat
The next morning leaving Dr Kerr + Mr Fulton anchored
where we spent the night before about three miles from
Kwai Ping. To our surprise they got into Canton just
one day after we did. They remained 4 days near
Kwai Ping then started down expecting to do considerable
work on the way down at the large towns. But on the
way down they struck a large rock in the middle of
the river and their boat sank in a little [?while?].
They would have been in a good deal of danger if a
boat had not come out from the short and taken
them off. They lost all they had on board amounting
to over 100- in the case of each of them ---
Many thank for your good long letters- the one
about Mother, and all the details about the children
which I read with much interest. They ought to be
grateful for all the [illegible] you look for [illegible] I
am glad you think they are pretty good boys
