Section of Letter from Henry

Hospital buildings; Military bases; Letters; Presbyterian theological seminaries; United States--History--Civil War, 1861-1865

Henry writes about an army chapel he is attached to. A hospital is being constructed. Henry has been assigned to a "colored" barracks. He also distributes papers along the lines and preaches not far from the enemy lines. He hears gunfire and can nearly see Petersburg and Richmond. He hopes that his siblings will write him letters, and asks the recipient to tell Edward to expect a letter as well. He asks that letters to him be directed to Hattie. Field Agent Cole of the Army wants him to stay attached, which he would have done if he was finished with seminary.

18 feet by 60 which [--closef--]
closely filled accommodates
about 200. There is preaching
in it every night and it is
generally pretty well filled some
times a good many have to go
away. They are building large
hospital barracks for the sick
as fast as they can. They
arranged around a circle
with the front end towards the
center this [Note: includes small drawing of rectangles in an arch] These are
nearly 300 feet long and 25 or
30 feet wide. Each one will hold
about 175 patients. There are to
be 24 of these barracks on one
hill and about 15 smaller ones
arranged in a similar manner
on the other. When complete
they will accommodate five
or six thousand patients

I have charge of one
of the large barracks and
a ward of 50 or 60 colored
men beside. Besides this
I go out along the lines
occasionally distributing papers
&c. &c. I preached last
Sabbath within 100 yards of
the rebel line of breastworks.
Could see very plain our
line of pickets and theirs also
There is no picket
firing along here between the
Appomattix and the James
[--riber--] rivers. We can hear
very distinctly however The
occasional report of hearing guns
towards Richmond at Dutch gap
and in front of Petersburg which
is 5 or 6 miles on the line to
the left of us. I have seen the
spires of Petersburg and have

been where in a clear day with
a glass, the spires of Richmond
can be seen. The day however
was not clear enough for me
to see them. I mean to try
and see them before I leave
Cathe has got fairly to going
in her kitchen and seems to
like it pretty well. Her business
is to keep the accounts, do the
writing, distribute the [?rictuals?] &c
&c which suits her taste
exactly. We are glad to
hear that father is getting better,
will want to hear from him very
often. You must write me
a good long letter, so may
Em + Sarah + Mary + Frank
and Edward + all the rest. You
[--call--] can tell Edward that I will
try and write to him before long.
The letters that you

send here you had better
direct to Hattie as I maybe
gone. i should like very well
to get one [--from--] at Allegheny City about
two weeks from to day.
Mr Cole the field
Agt of the Army wants me to
stay as Corps Age offers $60 (dollars)
a month and expenses paid I
wish I was through the Seminary
and I would have done it in a
minute. As it is I told him that
I thought I ought to go back and
finish my studies. He told me that
if I could work for them after I
was through to let him know as he [--It--]
presumed they would need men there
as much as now.
I stopped once or rather
promised to and now I guess will
stop for sure. I expect you and
May are first rate girls. I hope
I shall se home to see you in about
4 months more. Give my love to all
Hattie is not here or she would of cours
wish to be remembered. Give old
gray puss enough to eat and
train up Rover to be [u] a very
