Letter from Varnum to Daughter, November 29, 1884
Dublin Core
Title
Letter from Varnum to Daughter, November 29, 1884
Subject
Newspaper publishing--China; International relations; Kingdom of God; Letters; Winter
Description
Varnum writes to his daughter, thanking her for her letters. He realizes that much of the news he receives from China is unreliable. He hopes France and China can resolve their differences and adds that much of the blame can be attributed to England and the United States. Martha retrieved a letter from Mrs. Leaman saying all are ready to leave at moment's notice if the French incite conflict. Varnum feels good for his age but admits that his time will come. Martha is better after Dr. Kerr's help. He reports a snowy winter and a pleasant Thanksgiving.

My Dear Daughter
I have received
several letters from you since
I last wrote for which you have
my sincere thanks. I presume
you think it is about time they
should be answered. On account
of the troublous times you are hav-
ing we look for your letters with
unusual anxiety. We get news
from China through the news papers
but find it is not always reliable.
When it is [?palpably?] false, they do
not afterward correct it. After hear-
ing some extravagant and sensational
reports, we are surprised and grati-
died [^to find] how cooly and calmly you
write upon the subject. But while
you may feel a good degree of
personal safety it must be trying
to have your work interrupted.
I hope the time is not far distant
when the difficulties between the
French and Chinese may be amica-
bly adjusted. Other nations I sup-
pose generally lay the blame on
the French, but [--th--] England and
the United States have treated
China so badly that their mouths
are shut. But God who causes the
wrath of man to praise him will
undoubtable overrule all these things
for his own glory. Among all the
commotions and overtures among
the kingdoms of this world the
kingdom of Christ will continue
to move steadily onward, till all
other kingdoms shall be subject
to him and he shall reign from
sea to sea, and from the river to
the ends of the earth,
Martha has just come from the Post
Office bringing Women's Work for Woman
which contains a letter written
by you which I have read with
much interest. It has also a letter
from Mrs Leaman. They have so much
apprehension of trouble from
the French that they keep their
things packed ready to leave at a
moments warning.
I write but little about the home
news as I supposed the rest of the
family keep you posted in regard to
these things. I am enjoying pretty
good health for one of my age.
I still labour some but not as
much as I did a year ago. I am
gradually declining, and must expect
soon to go the way of all the earth.
Your mother continues about as
she has been for a long time.
Martha seems healthy and strong.
Since she followed Dr Kerrs
prescription, travelled about the
country and lectured she has
been improving. She is now so
fleshy I suppose you will scarcely
know her when she gets back to
China. I do not know when she will
go, I suppose not till the troublous
times there are over. Winter seems
really to have commenced. We have
[^had] a very pleasant fall till last sabbath,
when the weather became cold,
and has continued so most of the
time since. The ground is covered
with snow, not enough yet for sleigh-
ing. Thanksgiving passed off pleasant-
ly. The parents and five children
were at home. We have many bless-
ings to be thankful for though I
fear we do not properly appreciate
them. God is very gracious to us
as a family for which we should
render gratitude and praise. Thank
you for the account you sent me tof
the old east. The way it turned out
was really nice. Now I must close.
With an "immence" amount of love
your affectionate father, V. Noyes
