Harriet asks her mother to tell Mattie that she had to cut the althea by the verandah because insects were killing it. The grapevine has been growing but the grapes dry up before they have time to ripen.

June 17th 1881.
My dear Mother -
This is the anniversary
of your wedding day so I
will write you a letter. If
your lives are spared you
and Father will soon reach
your golden wedding day-
I remember so well the 17th
of June in 1877. It was Sabbath
Day and the Sabbath that
Lillie Mary and Verdie
spent with us. We had such
a delightful quiet afternoon
out on the grass in the front
yard. I hope you will have
as nice a day to-day. I wish
Mattie could have been at
home she must be getting
very near now. I shall
think of here as reaching
home next Tuesday as I
expect she will spend next
Sabbath in Chicago. I hope
this has been a nice bright
beautiful June day in
Ohio. It has been rather
warm here although there
has been a breeze which
has made it much more
comfortable than it would
otherwise have been. The
thermometer is 88° just now
we are having a splendid
shower which will cool the
air doubtless-- To-morrow Sat
afternoon I am going up to
spend with Lillie. She is
going to send her chair
down for me so I shall
go in style. Tell Mattie
I have had that althea
that grew by the verandah
cut down the one she
spoke of having cut down
when we came here.
Some insects had nearly
covered it and almost
killed it and Dr Kerr
said I ought to have it
cut down. It looks so bare
without it. I must try to
get something to put in
its place but I am
afraid it will be a long
time before anything will
grow high enough to fill
the place as it has. It was
rather an awkward shape
but the top of it was pretty
until the insects killed it.
Our grapevine is growing
nicely and has some
grapes but I suppose they
will not amount to anything
here they dry all up before
they have time to ripen
Mrs Kerr and Mr Fulton
seem to get on very well
together. I think she
would rather not have any
one in the family but she
says he is very easily pleased.
Dr Kerr wrote to her that he
had sold her sewing machine
so she bought another from
San Francisco and now has
two beautiful new Domestic
machines. I wish very much
Mrs Henry could buy one
of them - but she has a
little one that she makes
answer her purpose --
I wish I could fly over the
intervening space and spent
the next twelve times with you
instead of sleeping here in
Canton for it is now morning
of the 17th with you--
But I must find what
comfort I can in writing
to you instead I suppose
our next mail is nearly down
from Yokohama. I wonder
if Mattie sent you letters by
[Note: Letter concludes vertically on page one]
the Belgic. If not the Tokio would not be far behind
in reaching
USA.
