Letter from Hattie to Mary, March 14, 1890

Influenza; Voyages and travels; Rain and rainfall; Prayer groups

In this letter to Mary, Harriet talks about the spread of influenza. There is a party traveling that Harriet thinks will come back soon, as it has been raining a lot. Harriet tells Mary how those around her accommodate rainy weather. She commences her letter on the 17th, writing from the other room while waiting for a prayer meeting to end.

My dear Mary -
I must write you a
few lines on this anniversary
day .I have been in China
on my third term of service
a year today .This has
been such a dreary, dark,
dismal day. I have
been thankful all day
that it was not like this
last year , that was a
cloudy, cold day but it did
not rain . We think
perhaps the mail may
come in the morning,
but hardly expect it . We
all feel very anxious about
the next mail every one
nearly heard by the last
mail of friends who were
having the influenza.

There are a great many
cases in Singapore but as
a rule not sever . If it
started in China as it
is said it had gone quite
around the world now.
We have been having a
mission meeting this afternoon
among other matters which
were brought up they decided
to appropriate $ 560.00
to Henry's school building
from the local fund
and also to send Dr
Kerr and Mr Henry to
Shanghai to attend the
meeting of Conference .
We received letteres this
evening from our boat party.
The rain weather is
interfering somewhat with
their plans , It gets so
muddy in the country
where there are no paved

roads and no places to
gather audiences together
so of course they cannot do
much and if it continues
so they will probably come
home soon. I look for
them this week . this will
make six weeks which
is a pretty good trip . We
have had to have the
roof taken off from the
kitchen part of our house
as we found white ants
in it . It has troubled
us a long time by leaked
and whereever there is a
wet damp place the
white ants are soon to
find it. It is a rainy
time to attend to it but
it does not matter much
here for the Chines always
put up a mat shed
under which they are

from the rain in wet weather
and the sun in the dry. I
often think it would be
nice for builders at home if
they could have such an
arrangement but it is not so
necessary there as there.
This is the morning of the 17t
I am watching the door
In the adjoining room the
teachers have gathered for
their weekly prayer meeting.
They have a prayer meeting
every Monday morning
before they commence their
week's work They seem to
be having quite a lively
time together while waiting
for the last one come
Now she has come and
they have commenced
their meeting .We have such
a nice corps of teachers
now all so good and earnest
and faithful With love
