Letter from Hattie to Em, March 24, 1890

Mail steamer; Disease; Weather; Sick; Dengue

Harriet writes to Emily about the mail steamer and the changing weather. She is fearful that the drop in temperature will affect those who are sick. She says they seem as if they have a mild form of dengue fever. Dr. Kerr is not doing well and if he does not get better soon she presumes he and Martha will go back to America. Martha has had many visitors, in particular, there has been Olivia, Dr. Colburn, and Dr. Thwing.

My dear Em,
The steamer
has just passed and
we hope the home mail
is on board although
there were no flags up.
They have grown careless
about putting them
up I presume they
think it is hardly worth
while so early in the
morning. It is after
seven but so dark and
cloudy I can hardly
see to write. There was
such a sudden change
in the weather yesterday.
When we went over to
church it was very warm

but a shower came up
and the temperature
changed very rapidly,
in a little while it went
down ten degrees. I felt
some anxiety lest those
who are sick should
take cold. They look
so very miserable and
seem to feel so badly.
Several of those who
have had it are beginning
to go around again but
they seem very weak.
It does seem exactly
like a mild form of
dengue fever. Miss
Lewis seemed to be
taking it last evening
I have not seen her
yet this morning.

You will all remember
three years ago to-day.
Three years of the period
of separation are gone,
how different it would
seem it we did not so
surely know that we
shall see them again.
I remember Martha
wrote then that probably
inside of thirty years we
should all be together
on the other side. If
so one tenth of the time
has passed already.
Dr Kerr does not seem
at all well. I am
afraid he will not
be here long. If he
does not get better I
presume they will go

to America soon. I
hope the trip to Shanghai
will do him good and
that he will be able to
stay until next spring.
Martha is feeling perfectly
well. I think on the
whole she enjoys having
her house filled with
visitors though sometimes
it is tiresome. It was
a very great burden to her
to have Olivia there so
long but other guests are
different. There is a
young doctor there now
Dr Colburn and an
old doctor Dr Thwing
who has returned from
a visit of several weeks
in India which he
enjoyed immensely.

我记得玛莎当时写道，
可能在三十年内，
我们都应该在另一边在一起。
