he lived After a time a man
came home from California
who had become a believer
and now there is a church there
under the care of the Church
mission. Well so the work goes
on We know not which shall
prosper this or that or whether
both will be alike good. And
it does not matter whether we
know or not God does and that
is enough.
24th Well we will finish this in
time . Yesterday morning Sab.
a young man called whose
name was [?Binley?] - form
N Y City - a merchant there
he came to Canton on Sat.
is a christian, The place where
he was staying on Shamin
he said was not very enjoy
able. That they had all gone
hunting. We asked him to
spend the day with us but he

finally concluded to go to the
English Service in the morn
and come down to tea and be
here at the eve service. Their
dinner was at 8 P.M. so he
would necessarily lose it if he
was here so he came to tea -
Was very pleasant indeed
He may come to tea Wed.
eve. Will be in Canton about
two weeks. We were sorry to
hear of Clara's bad cold - and
we shall be so glad when the
next Steamer arrives for the
last mail brought us nothing
We know you have written
and the letter are some
where en route. The contractor
for Henry's school buildings was
over here this eve. His founda
tions are not very satisfactory and
he is to do some of the work over
much to his disgust. We look
for Dr Niles and Mrs Thwing in
about two weeks. The Thwings will be
