Title
Section of Unsigned Letter to Father, November 11, 1879
Subject
Missionary women; Friendly visits; Travel; Health; Lungs--Diseases
Description
The author, probably Mattie, writes that Hattie and Kittie Happer have been out visiting the day school. She talks about Miss Hartwell and her travel plans. She says that Mr Judson and his wife were not able to leave San Francisco because of his illness. Everyone seems to agree that Sarah A should leave and that her departure would be a blessing to the missionary cause at home and abroad.

Dear Father
Hattie and Kittie
are out visiting a day school
this afternoon but it is
almost time for them to
get back . Yesterday was
Kittie's birthday. As it was
the Sabbath we concluded
to have the Happer girls
come down to night and
take tea with her. They hope
to be here in time for a
game of croquet so I am
in momentary expectation
of their arrival. Miss Hart-
well who has been staying
with them will also be here
and we expect her to be our
guest now until she leaves
for Siam which may not
be for six weeks .It seems she
is not strong and feels she
must rest a month before
she enters her field .Thought
she would stop in San Fran
cisco but finally concluded
she would come on to Canton
and try its sanitary powers
It is not the best beginning
in the world is it? I have not
seen a great deal of her as yet
but it does not take long to get
acquainted with her She is
an orphan 35 years old has
only one sister who is married
so the home ties are not so strong
as ours. Is a great talker. Kittie
who has spent two days at the
Happers since she came
thinks she makes the pronoun
I pretty prominent. Perhaps
that will disappear in the older
missionary. She made quite
a number of remarks in our
Wednesday prayer meeting
wonder what Mr McDon[--n--]ald
will do when she gets to Siam
No doubt you will have heard
the Mr Judson and wife were
not able to leave San Francisco
on account of the illness of
Mr Judson. He took cold in
crossing the Rocky Mts. and had
some severe attack of [?lung?]
trouble. It seems somewhat
doubtful whether he is ever able
to come to China. No doubt it
will be a great disappointment
to Mr and Mrs Leaman who
will now be left alone in
[illegible] Chau when the Loons go
home .The Leamans are
just about going back after
being in Shanghai about 10
weeks. Lucy writes that she does
not get strong fast. If our
home people were on the ground
they would find that domestic
cares and anxieties to a great
deal of missionary time and
I do not think they would
agree with Mrs Holt of Shanghai
who says she thinks it would
be a great deal better if all the
single ladies were married
If they were all of the type of Sarah
A - I should agree with her
Hattie no doubt has told
you that individual is to leave
for England as we suppose
by the 1st of Jan. It is supposed
she may marry and English
man - do not know. It will
be a blessing to Missions when
she leaves China a blessing
to the cause at home and
abroad. What an awful
mistake sending such an
individual out and what
an expense she has been -
Out here people are throughly
convinced she better go home
the quicker the better. She goes
on [--her--] a medical certificate
I suppose given by Dr OBrien
but she seems able to do
Leaman
Leamans
