Mattie writes about how well the Dr. (Kerr) is doing, regardless of health and how little help he has. She is also grateful for her own health. They are working on expanding the boarding school and dealing with hiring new teachers. There is a table boy at Mattie's house that was offered a better paying job as Mr. Henry's cook but her refused.

The Dr has stood the wear
and tear of the year wonder
fully. Without rest or change
he has stood to the wheel
taking the place of Dr Niles
I think on five different
occasions when she has been
away -and I believe she has
been gone thus far this year
just one fifth of the time
Dr Swan was away in the
Country 3 weeks and returned
a week and a half ago, now
is ill. The Dr has this morning
taken on the care of every
thing without a word. Just now
he has gone to the other end
to see Mr Wisner. Mr Henry
we learn has been attacked
this morning . But we are
so thankful it is not
Cholera. It is a constant source
of thankfulness that I am

well. When I remember how
good for nothing I was at
home the present state of
things is almost miraculous
Am now in charge of 4
schools 2 in the city and 2
in the hospital. These last
cost a good deal of looking
after. The I play every
morning in at prayers, and
sell books afterwards to the
patients [--afterward--]. This is not
written in any spirit of ego
tism or self praise but only
to let you know how well
I have been . Miss Butler
has let me have the
teacher she employed as the
school was thoroughly run
down and would not hear
[--tl--] transfer to any other point
She has tried her best to keep
it going but could not [?own?]

to none of us know scarcely
what. The mission have felt
during the whole year that it was
not a good expenditure of
mission funds and were on
the eve of proposing it should
be stopped when the subject
of enlarging the Boarding
school has been brought
forward and as this boys school
house was to be incorporated
in the additions the whole
matter has been arranged without
a suspicion on her past that
any thing of the kind was intended
It is a mutual blessing that
she could send the teacher here
and that I could have him. She
had no work for him and here he
has a grand opportunity. Then
her teacher for the little
girls she felt was too old
for the place and she wanted
to change, so the talked the
matter over with me and the

result is I am to have her too
She only told her I wanted
her and that she was at liberty
to come and she told me sat-
urday that she was very glad to
come. so she did not know she
was in any case to be removed
from the other side .It was a
great pleasure to me to think
she wanted to come to me .
She was one of the old pupils
when I was here before and I
love her very much. Our poor
table boy who is now so ill
had an opportunity to leave us
last week to become Mr Henrys
cook at a 1.00 more per month but
he absolutely refused although we
urged him to go. Mrs Henry has
been without a regular cook
now for more than a month
and is getting a good deal worn
out. This boy has in many ways
been a great trial but when we
had this evidence of his attach
ment we felt it would be well to
