Description

Mattie writes about a tea she had with Henry and some other missionaries. Dr. Lang is going to Hong Kong to find a wife, and Mattie remarks that men keep joining the missionary field and they need more women. Dr. Kerr is still doing very well. Him and Dr. Swan had to go amputate a man's leg at midnight the Thursday before she writes this.

Then Henry came down
and I was so glad to see
him that I gave him a
loving little squeeze on the
arm where at he looked rath
er surprized. It is a habit
I have with the Dr you
see. Then Mrs Swan, Niles
{there I did not say Dr} H--
and I went off to the Str.
to see Mrs Thomson the Dr
and all the little Thomsons
It was arranged that all
their goods and calam
aties should be put off on
the Han Tan and they
should come to us to tea
Two more Miss Lewis and
Henry were invited so we

found we would number
10. I came home [?instan?]
ter and we got things
together so we had a very
nice time. Since our
experiences in the country
I find myself every now
and then looking for
articles that have disap-
peared but we shall set
ourselves right in time
I do not want to get
any more silver if I can
help it until Hattie comes
out as we would like
plaited ware. Well we
did enjoy it and they have
left this morning will

take Miss Baird with
them and be away at least
a month. We hear that
Dr Lang of Formosia is to
go to Hong Kong where he
proposes to take unto him
self a wife and then come
up here to make a visit
and look through the hospital
The womens department
is [?lestening?] in numbers but
the men keep right up.
The Dr gets on amazing
ly well. It is seldom there
are more than two here at a
time {Drs}. Last Thurs. eve
after a very busy day indeed
we having company from
Macau, then going to a

meeting of the Mutual
improvement society in
the eve. Got home about 10
Dr Swan and our Dr went
out to see a patient came
in at 11 and the Dr began
taking off his coat saying We
must go out and take off a
mans leg. It did seem so
dreadful to think of their
going out at midnight into
the hospital to do such work
Dr Kerr got in at 1 AM Dr
Swan at 2. Suffering hu
manity comes and goes in
a constant stream. The
Dr wanted me to go to Macau
last week but I have no
vim to pack up any more
this year. Want to stay at
home, can not write more.
