Canton July 24th 1874
Dear ones at Home
I am going to
write to you all together
this time as I am expecting
to start for Synod in about
2 or 3 hours. It almost
seems as though I ought to
be saying good bye but
of course I am no farther
from you up north than
I am here. I should have
liked it very much if some
of the rest could have gone but
it did not seem as though
they could very well this year.
Hattie thinks of going to Swatow
with Miss Shaw during her vacation
which is in a little more than

4 weeks from now. I hope
she will be able to ^do so as I am
sure she will feel refreshed
by it. I do not know Exactly
how long I shall be gone.
I do not anticipate getting
back until the beginning
of the cool weather. My
throat has been troubling me
a little for a while past and
the doctor advises me not
to hurry back - he says I
better rest my voice for awhile
speaking in market places has
I suppose been a little hard
for it. He says it is nothing
serious but that it needs rest.
No one else from our mission
is going but I shall meet some
of the other brethren, I doubt not
in Shanghai. I shall be sorry

to be away at the opening of
our new chapel but that can-
not be helped. It is almost
done. I was down to San-Ui
some two weeks ago and
held the first Communion
ever held in that great city
of 200 000 or more people.
There were only two of our own
members [illegible] the native assistant
and school teacher. -- then three
came over from the Wesleyan
Mission and so there were
five in all besides myself.
I think we all enjoyed the
day. It was a very small
and very rude chapel, compared
with churches at home, where
the service ^was held but I presume
that made little difference in
the eyes of Him who dwelleth
in temples not made with hands

We inclose by this mail
an order of Wm Rankin Esq
for $250- which we can
spare just as well as not
and which I hope you will
use for anything you want.
It is partly with the design
of helping the girls about going
to school. I hope Clara will
go to Wooster this coming year
if she wants to. We shall be
glad to keep her a little oc-
casionally if she needs it. I
do not think the money could be
put to a better purpose. I had a
letter from Dr Taylor a few days since
in which he speaks of our "[u]Excellent +
beloved sister" He says "She stands
among the vEry first in her class + Dr
Gregory her prof in Metaphysics, thinks her
equal to any mind under his teaching -
as indeed do we all". Well I must stop
now . Next time I hope to write from
some point farther north.
With ever so much love to
all Your own loving
-- Henry --
