Letter from Henry to Emily, September 15, 1882

Children; Brothers; Sermons; Travel; Sabbath

Henry and his family have been enjoying the change of scenery in Hong Kong. William and Richard have been especially enjoying it, they've been drinking cows milk, walking around in public gardens, and feeding ostriches and peacocks. They will be leaving next week, Henry expected that he would be doing more studying but he's been relaxing more. He has still been preaching while in Hong Kong.

Hongkong Sept 15 1882
Dear Em
I have just finished
a sheet to Edward and
have time for a few lines in
reply to yours received not
very long ago in which you
told me about your school
prospects. I hope you will
have a pleasant time at
Chi. It will be pleasant
to be so near home. I wrote
to Edward "all about the peak"
and so will here write some-
thing else. Willie & Richard
Varnum seem to have a
nice time here. We get good
foreign cow's milk of which they
drink a good deal and their
appetites seem quite increased
by the sea air and change. They

are just now having a
grand time in the big bath
tub It is large enough for
them both to get into and
splash about and they seem
to enjoy it immensely. Baby
calls William "William" speaking
it very quickly. He seems to
think he must do every thing
that "William" does. He is lighter
and more agile than Willie.
They go out for a walk
almost every morning. Often
they visit the public gardens.
What Willie has most to talk
about when he comes back
is the ostrich and the
peacock that are there. He
feeds them with leaves and
think it fine fun. We

expect to be here until next
Wednesday. I expected to do
considerable studying while
here but have not done much
The sea-bathing and sea-air
makes me sleepy and so
instead of studying I mostly
read the papers and sleep
Besides the regular servies
in Union Church I have
preached at the "Temperance
Union Hall" and at the
"Sailors Home" which are in
different parts of the city. I
gave a talk on temperance
at the former place last
night where I had preached
twice before. At the Sailors Home
I preached last Sabbath evening to
a very good audience. The

president of the Temperance
Society is a young Brahmin
from Bombay originally. He is
quite small but an efficient
earnest worker, tells me that
he has been in America, organ-
izing Temperance Societies and
also in England. He is a
clerk in the store of Messrs Sayle
& Cos. The Chinese have a good
large church here in connection
with the London Mission. I have
been present at their Sabbath
services both weeks and was
much pleased with the large
congregation. Mr Edge has asked
me to take the service next
Sabbath. Now I must close as it
is almost time for the mail.
