Letter from Henry to Ones at Home, May 17, 1883

In this letter, Henry writes that he is remembering seven years earlier when he was last home. He tells his family he hopes they are well and includes a description of his day. He continues the letter on May 18th and talks about the sermon he will give soon. The US Minister and Consul are dealing with an event Henry calls the "Ng Chau Affair."

Dear Ones at Home
It is just about the
same time in the morning that
I first got sight of Sarah + Clara
at the depot in Cleveland seven
years ago. My thoughts go back
this morning to that wonderfully
pleasant day. And then about half-
past nine, as I remember it, we
were going up the hill to the "Old
House at Home." How glad we
were that it rained that day so
that Sarah could have an excuse
for not going back to Columbus.
And then the day when we
all cut our names in the tree
comes back with its wealth of mem-
ories to-day. I wonder what
you are all doing. I expect to
have quite a busy day, as I am
in my own school, on the premises,
from 1/2 past six to Eight, and then
have a class in Dr Happer's school from
10 till eleven -- After dinner I go into
Sz-Pai-Lan for a prayer meeting and

also hear a large school of boys
recite them. The school is quite large
this year at Sz-Pai-Lan having 31 scholars,
more applied to come but I thought
that was enough for one teacher.
Last night Mrs Henry told
me that she thought Mr Henry
would not get back from the
country till after the Sabbath and
that I would have to preach. It
is now Thursday morning and I
have plenty to do, and so I think
I will take an old sermon if I
can find one that will do. The last
time I preached, I did not write the
sermon but spoke extempore so that
it is quite a good while since
I have written --
May 18th It is morning here but
still the [u]evening[/u] of the 17th with you
and I take up my pen to finish
this letter. To finish the last thing I
wrote about yesterday - I have looked
over my old pile of sermons and
concluded to preach on Sunday the
one written on the text "The throne of

God and of the Lamb shall be
in it". It was written in 1870.
There are not many missionaries
here now who heard it then, and
if those who were here remember
anything about they have a better
memory for sermons than I generally
have -- Yesterday afternoon I
spent as I anticipated at
Sz-Pai-Lan chapel - had the
school from 2-o-clock till 3 then
prayer meeting from 3 until 4, then
the scholars until 5 and then
walked home. I went up on the
city wall a part of the way
and so had a nice quiet
walk.-- got back at 6-o-clock, had
tea and found also that Dr Happer
had just got back from Synod.
We therefore spent a part of the
evening there hearing the news
of the meeting. He said he had
taken full notes and would report

at the prayer meeting. So I
expect we shall get full details
of the business next Wednesday.
Speaking of business re-
minds me that Consul Seymour
yesterday sent off the full report
off the "[u]Ng Chau affair[/u]" yesterday
to Peking and to the State Depart-
ment at home. We can includes
the destruction of the Baptist Chapel
and also the stoning we got there
last fall. It is now to be
made matter of discussion at
Peking and is to be settled there.
The New US Minister Young
as well as the Consul here
take strong ground in regard to
the matter and seem determined
to carry it through. Well my
teacher has come and it is
time for me to go to studying.
