Description

Henry writes to Edward on his brother's 54th birthday, mentioning gifts. Henry was glad to get the news on Uncle Augustus' last days and funeral. He was very glad that Harriet was able to attend the memorial service and he remembers the memorial for both of their parents. He would like Edward to save him a couple of programs from the funeral. Richard has gotten over his sickness and both the boys are going to school. William, who is 18, has been taking advanced classes. Henry concludes the letter by saying that he and Bella plan to attend a semi-annual meeting of the Ladies Board of Northern New York.

[Note: Sideways on page one] Tell Clara that we think the Turkey puzzleis Turkey in Europe, Turkey in Asia and Turkey [u/]on the plate[/]

Waterford Sept 29th (30th) 1888
Dear Bro Edward
Mary wrote in her letter
something about "Saturday being
Edward's birth-day" - so I suppose
as your real birth-day comes
on Sunday they are going to pretend
at home that it is partly on Sat-
urday. Therefore I will write a
few lines to-day sending the
best wishes of this whole family
You will receive, if you have not
already a book from Messrs
Carter + Bro's which please
accept from Bella + me in
rememberance of your 54th
birth day - with the hope that
you may be spared to Enjoy
many more- I was glad
to get all the news sent in
regard to Uncle Augustus' last
sickness and the particulars
in regard to the funeral- I
thought some of going and it
would have been a great satis-
faction to me to have been
there, but it rained hard here

all Monday night, and was
stormy Tuesday morning -
This coupled with the fact
that I had Enough fever to
make me feel more like
being in bed that anywhere
else led me to give up the
idea of going.
Sept 30th I wrote the above
yesterday and something in-
terrupted so I did not finish
and I am going to write a
line to say you are not
forgotten on your real birth-day.
I have just come back from
morning service where Dr Riggs
gave us an account of
the origin and objects of the
Christian Endeavor Society- He
thinks it one of the most re-
markable movements that
has ever taken place in the
history of the church- From
what he said I should
think it was very wisely
organized -
Oct 1st On Saturday I was writing

about Uncle Augustus- I am glad
Hattie could be at the funeral. I
am sure all the good that was
said about him was true-
The Memorial of Father and Mother
I was glad to get- If you have
enough, I would be glad if you
would save two or three extra
copies for me- I do ^not need them
just now but I might some-
time like to have them.
We are all well. Richard has
entirely recovered from his trouble +
the boys are going to school. They
are having a good deal of exercise
and enjoyment gathering hickory
nuts on their grandma's farm
where they have leisure after school
and on Saturday's. I may
have written that Willie was one
of eighteen who, out of a class of
fifty three, were advance one
class at the beginning of the
year. We had been trying to
persuade him to try for another
grade by the middle of the year
but he did not seem to think he
could do it- He was therefore quite
please when his teacher told him about
a week ago that if he would study well
and his father would help him she thought
he ^could go into the next grade by the End of Nov- Two

or three days after he came home learning
saying that the Superintendent had taken
with two others into the next
class- He is in fractions now. He +
Richard both understand well what
they have gone over- Richard oc-
casionally gives us some valuable
information in ^in his own original way in physiology which he
has learned at school-
We have had two frosts and
to day it is raining- not very
cold yet but I suppose we shall
have cold weather before very long-
We have a good stack of coal laid
in so that we shall keep warm.
Bella is expecting to go to po'keepsie
(near there) to a missionary
meeting next Thursday + possible
I may go along- We expect also
to attend the semi-Annual meeting
of the Ladies Board of Northern New
York which meets at Hoosac Falls.
Oct 11th Dr Dennis of Syria is
also to be there- I was down
to New York about 3 weeks ago and
spent a pleasant Evening at Dr
Ellinwoods + had a talk on various
matters. They understand at the rooms now,
if not before, that there is some difference of
opinion about just what Dr Happers grand
college scheme may be expected to accomplish-
I find Dr Gillespie my old classmate, and I
agree very well about the general principles
on which missions are to be conducted.
The Board allows the Fultons to come home if
they pay their own expenses home - the Board will send
them back. Well my paper is full and so I will stop.
Love from us all Your Aff Bro -Henry-
