Waterford N.Y.
Nov 28th 1888
Dear Hattie
I write a few lines
this morning to send my good
bye to you before you leave
for China as they wrote that you
would leave soon after thanksgiving.
I hope you will all have a
pleasant thanksgiving day at
the old homestead. When you get to
China I shall be glad to be kindly
remembered to all the friends +
if you go to Portland to Mrs
Preston also. I had a letter from
Dr McCandliss a day or two since
reporting a comfortable voyage as
far as Singapore. How glad Dr Kerr
+ Mattie will be to see them, and
afterwards you when you arrive.
I hope you will have a pleasant

voyage. Dr Kerr wrote me
that our house has been offered for
sale. I hope they will not let it
go too cheap. I sent two plans, one
to Wisner and one to Dr Kerr. If
they build I hope they will use
the second plan where the
two buildings are a little separated
and not the first when they are
joined together- I presume they
will do it all right- We expect
to have a thanksgiving turkey in
our own house. There is service
in the Baptist Church a union
service and the pastor of the
Presbyterian Church is to preach
the sermon. Bella + I are going to
buy this morning. I am getting a
new suit a clothes, in the prospect
of starting for Hartford on Friday.
Gilbert sent us a very cordial

invitation to visit them and as
the boys have vacation for a week
after thanksgiving we are going to
take them along. Dr Mitchell in
writing to me a few days since spoke
very nicely about father said that
when he saw him about seven
years ago he impressed him as
"one of the most venerable and
dignified christian men that he
had ever seen". He said his own
father died at the age of almost
84 and retained his faculties
perfectly to the last- was an Elder
in the Pres church ------
Richard was talking yes-
terday about writing to his aunts
in reference to a dog + horse show
that he and Willie + their papa saw
on Monday evening in the town
hall. There were eight little ponies

and about a dozen dogs.
They all performed on the stage. The
ponies would go through marching
drill at the word of command-
form by two's or three's or four's or
in single file as he ordered them
[--one or--] two of them were trained to
come to the front and bow to the
audience. The dogs of course did all
sorts of things. Two were dressed up in
boys and girls clothes and came
in and made a visit, wheeling in
a perambulater with a little dog in it
and then taking their seats in
two little chairs - walking on their
hind legs perpendicular all the time.
It was quite funny. One greyhound
leaped over a pile of chairs nearly to the
top of the [?high?] room- We have been having
snow here- now thawing. Again wishing
you a pleasant + prosperous voyage
Your Aff Bro
