Canton May 3d 1909
My dear Em
I wrote a home letter on the 24th of April and prom-
ised to add some more before the mail would leave, I
send to you now an account of the fact that t-morrow is
your birth-day, and moreover I have had a letter from
you since April 24th. I wish you a happy day +
many returns. It is just a year since we arrived
at the "old house at home" that is counting by the
days of the week. It was the first Monday in May
How pretty every thing looked. What a fine blossoming
our of the apple trees. Sad what a nice time I had
for the next two months with you three fist and then
four on the old farm. We calculate that Martha prob
ably got home about the close of last week and so
you will have her at home to celebrate your birth
day this year, and this letter will get home about the
time she has a birth day and one or two more near
the same time, so I might as well send general good
day birth-day wishes to you all. Bella has just
gone to her school and dispensary at [?Po Lab Shui?] but
left her birth-day good wishes to be sent to you by
me, Clara must not forget her sly attempt to get
the present of a fine fat lamb on her last birth-
day and how wretchedly it failed If she repeats the
attempt this year it will meet with better succum.
We have had no more cases of plague in the
school and I hope will not have. We do not hear of
any cases around us here on [?Fati?]. The student
who died myst I think have contracted the disease
over in the city. Its has been a great comfort to
have Dr Machle here to look after the sick. By the
way to-day is his birth day.

William + Mary + Willie S, are in Hongkong. Mary + the
baby have been there nearly four weeks and it has been
a good thing no doubt for both of them. Baby at any
rate has gained more than two pounds since going there
notwithstanding he has gone through the experience of
being vaccinated. It too well. William left for a week
ago Friday to visit the [--county--] country stations, or rather
some of them in Dr Fulton's field and the next
Thursday went over to Hongkong. I am glad he could
have three or four days there as his life is rather
"strenuous"
I had the pleasure of performing a marriage
ceremony at the American Consulate last Saturday, in
place of William who would have had the job had he
been here. I got the nod from the Consul General at
exactly 3 P.M. I hustled around got ready and across
the river and to the Consulate about 1/4 before. The groom
was an officer from the "Rainbow" just now in Hongkong +
the bride an interesting and quite young lady who
with her mother had just come from Washington D.C.
to meet her furure husband in Hongkong. They found
they would have to give two weeks notice in Hongkong +
so with two or three friends, one of whom was the Captain
of the Siberia. Well a note from the Consul has
just come in and I must answer it so good-bye
for this time
We are having wonderfully cool weather for this
time of year, are still wearing thick clothing
Ever so much love to you all from
Henry
